Scheduled and recurring gifts
A recurring gift charges your card on a schedule — weekly, monthly, or quarterly — and splits the amount across one or more recipients and funds. You manage every schedule from Scheduled & Recurring under Giving in the dashboard sidebar.
Setting one up
Section titled “Setting one up”Select New recurring gift at the top of the page. It opens the same Donate window you use for one-time gifts; choose Monthly or Quarterly as the frequency and complete the payment step. Your default card is preselected.
The two tabs
Section titled “The two tabs”- Upcoming Donations — the default view. It lists only active schedules, ordered by next charge date, and shows a detail card with the next charge date, the payment method, and the allocations table.
- Giving Schedules — a table of every schedule, including paused and cancelled ones. Cancelled rows appear at half opacity. This is where the Modify button lives.
View in Giving Schedules on the detail card switches tabs and highlights the matching row.
Reading a schedule
Section titled “Reading a schedule”Each row and detail card shows:
- Cadence — how often the gift charges.
- Next charge — the date and payment method for the next charge.
- Allocations — the “Organization · Fund” lines and their amounts.
- Status — Active, Paused, or Cancelled.
- Anonymous — shown beneath the row when the schedule is anonymous.
Modifying a schedule
Section titled “Modifying a schedule”Select Modify on a schedule. Everything in the dialog saves the moment you change it — there is no save button, and Done only closes the window.
- Cadence — Weekly, Monthly, or Quarterly.
- Timing — Beginning, Middle, or End of the period.
- Amount — whole dollars only. Changing the total rescales every allocation proportionally, so your existing fund split is preserved. The first line absorbs rounding remainders. Every scaled allocation must stay at or above $5, or the change is rejected with “A minimum $5 allocation is required.”
- Payment method — any card in your wallet, including a card the schedule was originally set up with even if you removed it from the list view.
- Anonymous — hide your identity from recipients.
Pause, resume, and cancel
Section titled “Pause, resume, and cancel”- Pause stops future charges immediately. The schedule and its history stay intact.
- Resume starts the charges again.
- Cancel schedule cancels permanently. There is no confirmation step, and a cancelled schedule cannot be modified afterwards.
When a card is declined
Section titled “When a card is declined”Three consecutive failed charges auto-pause a schedule. The Giving Schedules table marks it with a warning icon and the text “Card declined”.
Resuming an auto-paused schedule opens a warning first: resuming with the same card will likely fail again on the next cycle. The dialog offers Update card — which takes you to your Wallet — and Resume anyway.
Update the card in Wallet first, then come back and resume. Saving a new card does not silently repair anything; the schedule simply uses it on the next charge.
What a change does not do
Section titled “What a change does not do”Two things surprise people:
- Changes never rewrite completed transactions. Editing cadence, amount, or payment method affects future charges only; past charges keep their own records.
- A recipient who stops accepting donations does not cancel your schedule. Schedule state and recipient eligibility are separate, so Homeward preserves your instruction. If a recipient becomes ineligible, the charge fails rather than being redirected elsewhere.
Related
Section titled “Related”Making a gift covers setting the schedule up. Wallet — cards, addresses, and giving defaults explains how to change the card a schedule uses. Donation history, receipts, and annual statements shows the charges each schedule produced.
